In remembrance of those police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty as a result of criminal acts, enemy action, misadventure or accident, natural causes and unknown causes.

  • PC Lewis Bentley (54)
    Died April 4, 1886
    Collapsed and died of heart failure after assisting in a violent arrest.
  • PC William Henry Wells (31)
    Died November 21, 1906
    Found drowned in a canal on night duty in suspicious circumstances.

Leicester City Police

  • D/Sgt Leonard Thomas Norman (34)
    DC Brian Mansell Hawkes (26)
    DC Edwin George Trump (26)
    Died November 20, 1940
    Killed by the direct hit of a bomb on their incident post during an air raid.

Leicestershire and Rutland Constabulary

  • PC John P. Newell (28)
    Died January, 1956
    Fatally injured in a road accident while returning home from duty.
  • T/Sgt Cyril John Thoroughgood (29)
    Died September 28, 1956
    Shot by terrorists while serving with the British Police Unit in Cyprus.
  • PC John Thomas Davidson (37)
    Died July 18, 1967
    Fatally injured in a patrol car, which crashed responding to an accident.

  • PC Thomas George Barrett (36)
    Died August 15, 1886
    Beaten to death by a man he spoke to about non-payment of a fine.
  • PC William Adiel Wilkinson (32)
    Died May 25, 1903
    Shot dead in an ambush by two men who bore police a grudge.
  • PC Harold Prew (43)
    Died March 21, 1941
    Collapsed and died of heart failure after rushing to investigate a fire.
  • PW Catherine Phyllis Godfrey (31)
    Died May 3, 1974
    Fatally injured in a cycling accident recalled to duty on a stormy night.
  • PC Philip Andrew Eames (24)
    Died August 1, 1974
    Fatally injured in a road accident while on motorcycle patrol.
  • Sgt Brian Dawson (42)
    Died September 1, 1975
    Shot dead as he arrived at the scene of previous fatal shooting.
  • PC Nicholas Edward M. Archer (28)
    Died April 22, 1984
    Killed when struck by a car while escorting a large crowd at night.
  • PC Ian Thomas Wheelwright (49)
    Died March 22, 1991
    Fatally injured when struck by a passing car at an incident scene.
  • PC Giles Fraser Drinkall (35)
    Died April 2, 1997
    Killed in a road accident when he lost control of his police motorcycle.
  • PC Timothy Philip Burton (41)
    Died June 29, 2001
    Killed when his police car crashed while returning from enquiries.
  • PC Bryan Reginald Moore (39)
    PC Andrew Carl Munn (37)
    Died August 15, 2002
    Killed when a van being pursued by police deliberately drove into them.
