Equality Information & Analysis

The Equality Act 2010 ensures protection from unlawful discrimination is provided by to the following protected characteristics: 

• age

• disability

• gender reassignment

• marriage and civil partnership

• pregnancy and maternity

• race

• religion and belief

• sex

• sexual orientation 

The Equality Act 2010 also introduces a public sector equality duty which is made up of a general duty and supported by specific duties. 

The general equality duty requires Leicestershire Police, in the exercise of its functions to have due regard to the need to: 

  • Eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation and any other conduct that is prohibited by or under the Act.
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a relevant protected characteristic and people who do not share it.
  • Foster good relations between people who share a relevant protected characteristic and those who do not share it.

Collecting and analysing equality information helps us to understand the impact that our policies and practices can have on people with different protected characteristics and our communities. 

This information also helps ensure that we do not unlawfully discriminate against those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
