How can I help a victim of rape?

Being told that someone close to you has been raped can lead to a variety of feelings such as disbelief, anger, blame and guilt.

If they tell you, it is most probably because they trust you and they need your help and support.

You may want to go and find the person responsible and confront them - don't! Listen to them, find out what they want to do, offer choices and believe them.

How can you help them?

  • Believe them.
  • Reassure them.
  • Encourage them to report the incident to the police or to Juniper Lodge.

If the person wishes to report the incident to the police (whether the incident is current or historical) advise: No food, drink or smoking if oral sex alleged; not to wash or bathe; to keep clothing (unwashed) that was worn.

Rape can affect a victim for their entire life, therefore it is essential that they get support and advice to enable them to move forward with their lives.

Volunteering as a support worker for Juniper Lodge

Volunteers are members of the community who, following training, make an invaluable contribution by working unpaid, assisting people who have been raped and sexually assaulted.

If you think you have the enthusiasm, commitment and skills to provide this valuable contribution then telephone Juniper Lodge 0116 2735461 for an application form.
