Police appeal following 19 reports of damage in Wigston- Updated arrests
Police have received 19 reports of damage following the disorder in Wigston on Friday night.
Officers received a number of calls on Friday (February 5), at about 9.15pm from people in Gladstone Street and Victoria Street in Wigston who had witnessed a large group of youths walking the streets damaging vehicles.
Callers reported seeing between 80 and 100 youths in the area throwing glass bottles, pulling wing mirrors from cars, smashing wing mirrors and car windscreens. One victim also reported having a front window of their house smashed with a glass bottle.
Within three minutes officers were at the scene and five arrests were made for public order offences. However officers are keen to find those responsible for the damage.
PC Adam Bagely, the officer investigating the incident, said: “This behaviour will not be tolerated. Vandalism is a criminal offence.
“Within a matter of minutes we had received six calls from people in the area reporting the damage to us so we feel optimistic that there are people who will be able to help us locate those people responsible and ask anyone with information to call us.
“We already work closely with colleges and schools in the area, planning events with them and generally keeping each other up to date. Since Friday we have been in contact with one college in the area who are keen to help us with our investigation and hopefully identify those responsible.
“We will also be increasing patrols in the area over the coming weekend to prevent this from happening again.
“We are keen to speak to anyone who saw the youths before of after the incidents, so please call us if you have any information.”
