Melton police appeal for witnesses to continue their good work on burglaries

Melton police, whose hard work has seen a 35% reduction in burglaries this year, are appealing for help in finding those responsible for break ins at the homes of local residents.

Proactive work carried out by Melton officers meant they succeeded in reducing their burglary figures by over a third, the equivalent of about 64 victims, for 08/09 to 09/10.

Officers are now appealing for help, as four burglaries in two weeks threatens to put a dent in those figures.

The most recent incident happened sometime during the evening on Saturday February 6, at a house in Solway Close where a Dell laptop was stolen.

Over a week before that sometime between 6pm on Tuesday January 26 and the following morning (Wednesday January 27) another two houses were burgled in Croxton and Grimstone. Taken in the burglaries were various items of jewellery and electrical goods such as televisions and a DVD player.

The fourth burglary happened during the afternoon on Tuesday January 26 in Scalford. A large amount of property was taken including jewellery, a mobile phone, a number of electrical and gardening goods and two cameras.

Insp John Gray, the police commander for Melton, said: “The hard work carried out by officers from Melton has really paid off with a significant decline in the number of burglaries in the past year. We will continue to target those responsible and our beat officers will continue to work closely with the community to reduce those numbers even further.

“As part of this we are asking residents in Melton to help us with four burglaries we are currently investigating.

“If you have any information about the burglaries or those responsible please call us. We would also like to speak to you if you have been approached by anyone trying to sell you goods that you believe could be stolen.

“To help us in our fight to keep burglary numbers down we would like to remind the public about what they can do to keep their homes and property safe.

“Many burglaries happen when windows and doors have been left open. Before leaving your home always remember to check that all windows and doors are secure. It is also a good idea to keep any valuables out of sight, do not give burglars a reason to target your home.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact an officer from Melton on 0116 222 2222 and extension number 4533. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
