CID Officer

As a CID (Criminal Investigation Department) Officer you are involved in the detection and investigation of serious crimes and offences, such as rape, murder, serious assault, high value fraud and other crimes that require complex investigations.

This is a largely detective role and so intensive training is required in order for an officer to work effectively in the field. The CID Officer is responsible for acting upon intelligence received and then building an investigation right from the incident, through to the arrest and prosecution of a hardened criminal.

CID Officers usually start their career as regular police officers before specialising in serious crime investigations. The role is challenging and demanding, but comes with great satisfaction when known criminals are convicted from their hard work.

There is no typical day in the CID which is what makes the job so challenging, you either walk in to complete multiple enquiries on multiple investigations or are tasked to react to incidents that have only just happened. This may involve you working alone or as part of a team. It is not unheard of to start work at 8am and finish in the very early hours of the next morning.

The role requires a sharp eye for detail, excellent memory, a good judgement of character as well as experience of working alone and as part of a team of other officers.
