Training

When an offer of appointment is made, you'll undergo extensive training as a Student Officer. Your initial training lasts for two years during which time you'll work towards a foundation degree in policing.

The programme you will embark on is divided into three stages. The first phase lasts for 23 weeks and is spent at De Montfort University in Leicester. Much of the time is spent learning legislation, core policing skills and looking at criminal Justice theory and its application to practice.

During the second phase, student officers spend much of their time on patrol with a practice tutor gaining practical operational experience and linking theory to practice. Gradually you will take on more individual tasks until you are ready for independent patrol.

Once on patrol, your training continues for the remainder of the programme based in the workplace. This will be supported by workshops run by De Montfort University and your local Professional Development Unit based on your local policing area. Your performance will continue to be assessed throughout the two years.

At the end of a successful two-year programme, you will be awarded your foundation degree in policing and your appointment in the office of constable will be confirmed.
