The role of the Special Constable
Special constables are crucial to offering an extra police presence and providing added support and guidance to members of the public. They need to have a caring attitude to their work and a willingness to listen to other people’s problems. Specials must also demonstrate an ability to problem solve and converse at a strategic level, as well as having an understanding of diversity issues.
For those who might be unable to join the Force full-time, joining as a special gives people an opportunity to put something back into their community on a voluntary basis. Most specials typically work after retirement or alongside their full-time or part-time job, and so, the role requires a great deal of commitment and motivation.
The key functions of a special include patrolling the streets and supporting the work of police officers on duty, policing local events, assisting police officers at road traffic incidents, raising awareness of Force initiatives and campaigns, and liasing with local schools and colleges to promote crime prevention.
Through ongoing police training and experience on the streets, specials develop key skills that stand them in good stead for life. They become quick-thinking team players and able to resolve disputes with tact, as well as developing the ability to cope with the unexpected and stay calm in a crisis.
With more confidence and extra experience in the Force, many specials go on to become full-time police officers. For those who would prefer to stay voluntary there is an opportunity to develop in the role to special commandant where you will be given greater responsibility to manage a team of specials. You will attend meetings with area officers and senior management teams to find out which issues needs tackling and then communicate the information onto your staff.
As a commandant you will be responsible for the development and maintenance of an efficient and effective volunteer Force. You need to be easily available to your staff and able to manage a large number of special officers over a wide Force area. Good audit and inspection skills are also useful as a commandant.
