Major crime unit

The major crime unit is part of the Major Crime Investigation Section. It provides support to the Senior Investigating Officers based within the Crime Support Department to provide a core response to incidents of homicide, attempted homicide, kidnap and other occurrences defined as 'major incidents' within Leicestershire.

The support offered includes expertise in the field of suspect management and gathering 'best evidence' from witnesses. It also covers a response to deal with exhibits and disclosure issues and, in the centralised HOLMES Indexing Team, a flexible resource to enable the setting up of a HOLMES incident room response to major crime at short notice and to sustain that response.

The administration and co-ordination of an additional major crime function, that of Family Liaison, is also dealt with from within the Major Crime Investigation Section.

Apart from the ability to respond to major crime within the Force, the Major Crime Unit may be able (depending on demand) to offer support to Areas in terms of assisting in those Area based enquiries which have not been designated as major crime enquiries, by providing resources to supplement Area investigation teams.
