Child Abuse Investigation

The aim of the Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU) is to protect children, investigate offences against children and, where appropriate, prosecute offenders. To achieve this, the unit works in partnership with other agencies and for and in support of the four Leicestershire Constabulary policing areas.

The unit undertakes all investigations involving allegations of neglect and physical and sexual abuse of children who were under 18 years of age at the time of the offence and the abuser is known to them.

The unit acts as a central reference point for all child protection matters within its remit, receiving and analysing information and determining the appropriate police response.

It ensures that intelligence concerning the safety and welfare of children is disseminated effectively, both within and outside of the organisation, and acted upon appropriately. It also maintains a centralised record of all child protection investigations.

Specialist advice and guidance is provided to areas in the investigation of other violent and sexual crimes involving child witnesses and victims.

The unit also represents the Force on the two area Child Protection Committees and participates in the work of the local safeguarding children board (LSCB).
