Strategic planning, corporate governance and business change
The Corporate Development department is responsible for the strategic planning, corporate governance and business change arrangements for the Force. This is delivered through five business areas - Performance Review, Executive Support, Performance Improvement Unit, Service Improvement and Business Change.
The Performance Review Department collates statistics and data from various sources, enabling the Force to review its overall performance and analyse trends of crime, detection, user satisfaction, sickness and other matters.
Questionnaires are sent to victims of certain incidents by the Survey Team. Results from these questionnaires’ enables us to review the level of customer satisfaction with the service provided by the Force. Reports are produced on a regular basis for a number of different customers, for example, the Home Office on crime generally, Firearm Crime, Motoring Offences and Arrests. Reports are also written for the Police Authority.
Increasingly our data is subject to external audit, so the maintenance of high quality and accurate statistics is a important golden thread in all that we do.
The Executive Support section is responsible for developing and ensuring delivery against the Police Authority’s three year Policing Strategy and the Annual Policing Plan. This is achieved in part by corporate oversight of all area and departmental business plans. This section also ensures, through a coherent programme board arrangement, that strategic development of the Force is well managed.
The Performance Improvement Unit is the single point of contact for all external Inspections, ensuring that professional and robust arrangements are in place to deal with the ever-increasing levels of scrutiny. It also provides a facility for internal inspections, either through a rolling inspection programme, proactive interventions or specific requests.
The Service Improvement Unit works to provide a Citizen Focused Police Service that responds to the needs of communities and individuals, especially victims and witnesses, and inspires confidence in the Police. One of its primary aims is to identify opportunities to enhance the level of service provided to the public either through innovation or by challenging current practice and procedures.
Finally, the Business Change section is at the forefront of the Constabulary’s aim to be 'Second to None' by identifying and implementing organisational change through a structured change programme. It is the single point of contact for all project management and also for delivering the annual best value reviews. It also has responsibility for the force suggestion scheme "Solutions" and tackling bureaucracy.
The Health and Safety section is responsible for providing health and safety advice that assists the Force in meeting its statutory obligations. The department advises staff at all levels of seniority including police officers, police staff, specials constables and volunteers to ensure that they are able to look after the safety of their staff and others who may be affected by the activities of the Force.
Health and safety management enables the Force to undertake its work in a safe manner and, therefore, absence due to accidents and injuries is minimised. This ensures that the financial resources of the Force are not diverted away from service provision.
The Constabulary has won six consecutive British Safety Council International Health and Safety Awards due to its commitment to proactive health and safety management.
