Serious Collision Investigation Unit

Collision investigation unit

Our team investigates all incidents of road death in our county.  They are treated as an unlawful killing from the outset, in line with the recommendations of the ACPO 2007 Road Death Investigation Manual and where appropriate, the ACPO Murder Incident Manual, with the disciplined and rigorous methods that are required.  We also investigate life-threatening collisions and where dangerous driving is disclosed, will actively consider an offence of ‘causing grievous bodily harm’ as well.  We have a close working relationship with our team of dedicated lawyers from the Crown Prosecution Service and also have close liaison with Her Majesty’s Coroners in the county.

The Unit is headed by a Detective Inspector with three teams, each comprising a Detective Sergeant, three Detective Constables and three uniform PC Forensic Collision Investigators.  All are highly trained and qualified in their respective fields.  The investigations are supported by members of the RPU who are trained and accredited Family Liaison Officers.

The Serious Collision Investigate Unit aims to conduct a full, thorough, fair and rigorous investigation of road death within the ambits of the law, to provide answers for the families of those affected by the death and to prosecute the perpetrators where appropriate.
