Welcome to the Counties BCU

The Counties' Basic Command Unit (BCU) is so named as it has policing responsibility for the area covered within the boundaries of Leicestershire County Council and Rutland County Council.

Within the BCU there are seven district councils, namely Charnwood, North West Leicestershire, Melton, Hinckley, Blaby, Oadby and Wigston and Market Harborough and the boundaries of the BCU match those of the relevant local authorities.

The BCU is led by Chief Supterintendent Chris Thomas and a Senior Management team who deliver policing services across nine Local Policing Units (LPUs). Officers in the Counties' BCU face a wide variety of challenges to meet the needs of people who live, work and commute through this part of the county.

Loughborough has a large University with an international reputation for sporting excellence and a large student population. Coalville, Shepshed, Ashby, Wigston, and Hinckley are all busy towns. Each has a thriving night time economy which has the potential to bring with it the drink-related problems normally associated with city centres.

The eastern part of the county encompasses the market towns of Melton Mowbray and Oakham, with an extensive rural population, including of course Rutland Water.

Further south the towns of Market Harborough and Lutterworth are covered by the BCU, both of which have an increasing urban population as well as bordering onto Northamptonshire and Warwickshire.

The M1 and M69 motorways run through the heart of the BCU as well the following major roads, the A1, A5, A6, A42, A46, and A47.

In addition to Northamptonshire and Warwickshire, the Counties' BCU also borders Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Lincolnshire.
