Hello Again,

More great results for Loughborough since my last Blog as overall crime continues to reduce, detections continue to rise and the Festive period went without any significant incident.

'Operation Label' was launched in response to an increase in bike thefts and student accommodation burglaries in the latter part of last year and thanks to some great detective work by Loughborough officers I am pleased to report that amongst other arrests a 20 year old man was arrested and charged with burglary and another 21 year old charged with robbery. This has been followed more recently by the arrest of four people caught in the act of stealing bicycles in Loughborough Central beat which is fantastic news.

In another high profile operation responding to concerns from local residents, fourteen people were arrested and six charged in relation to drug related offences on the Bell Foundry Estate in Loughborough. Continued drug dealing can blight an area bringing with it associated problems of  anti-social behaviour which impacts on great quality of life that residents of Loughborough generally experience. In maintaining this great quality of life free from drug dealers and ASB my Loughborough police team are committed to acting on information from the public and jointly with our partners, bringing people to justice. My team of police officers are as passionate about relentlessly pursuing criminals as I am.  With the continued support of the community and our partners such as Charnwood housing and the Charnwood borough council we will achieve great things during 2012.

The students return to Loughborough this week after the Christmas break and we are launching 'Operation Umbel' in an effort to prevent burglaries and deal with any associated anti social behaviour. I appreciate that our student population may have returned with some wonderful new Christmas presents and we would like these to stay with their rightful owners so again I would ask that care is taken to ensure they are not left on display and windows and doors are secured.

Finally, this only leaves me to wish you all a safe and Happy New Year!

Great news this month for Loughborough as overall crime is down and detections are up!

The end of September saw the new students arrive and Op Umbel commenced which is a multi agency operation devised to target an anticipated increase in burglary dwellings and anti social behaviour around the University. This operation involved additional high visibility patrols and plain clothes officers patrolling the key areas and crime prevention initiatives which included education for students in keeping property safe and being a good neighbour; cycle tagging and conducting door knocks to offer crime prevention advice. This seemed to work initially, however unfortunately over the last month there has been a large increase in cycle thefts around  the University beat and an increase in student premises related burglary dwellings. Op Label has been designed to further target the issues and additional staff have been allocated to conduct patrols, target suspects and further crime prevention events will be taking place such as 'pimp my bike'. I am pleased to say that early indications are very positive and that there have been no burglaries in this area for the last five days. I am always keen to prevent crime happening at all would encourage you to help us with this by ensuring your windows and doors are locked and bicycles secured.

On a lighter note the Mayor's Parade took place on Saturday 29 October 2011 which involved many students from the University on fancy dress floats that travelled through Loughborough and raised a substantial amount of money for a variety of charities and of course the great family attended event, the Loughborough Fair took place last week. I am pleased to say that both events passed without incident.

And Lastly what a fantastic turn out for the Loughborough Remembrance Parade I am told it was the best ever with Thousands of spectators and an increase in members of the public wishing to lay a remembrance wreath and be part of the marches through the Town centre. It was my first here at Loughborough and I thought it was a very special memorable day the poppy petals fluttering down during the two minutes silence was emotional and a lovely touch by the organisers.

4th October 2011http://www.leics.police.uk/policing/3_counties_bcu/13_loughborough/blog/2011-10/#p1002

The Shepshed neighbourhood beat team is to stay in its current location after the police agreed a deal with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.

During a review of the cost effectiveness of some police buildings, twelve premises, including Shepshed, were earmarked for review.  The review concluded that to meet the demands of a modern police force it was more beneficial to base neighbourhood beat teams in buildings which are shared by other agencies and in the heart of communities.

As a result, a number of beat teams across the Force area, have relocated into other buildings, many of them belonging to Parish Councils, where they can work successfully without having to travel back to their main station using modern technology such as mobile data terminals and Blackberrys.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service owned the building on Charnwood Road in Shepshed but Leicestershire Constabulary had a 99 year lease on the offices it used which it could have sold on the open market however the fire brigade have bought the lease from the police and allocated the front part of the building to the police free of charge for five years.  This means residents in Shepshed will still have a locally based beat team although the front enquiry facility, which was staffed by volunteers, will no longer exist.

The memorial plaque dedicated to Andrew Munn and Bryan Moore who were killed in 2002 while on duty when their stationary car was deliberately rammed, will be moved from its current location in the building into the beat office.

The information above is excellent news for the people of Shepshed as it keeps their beat team just where they should be - at the heart of their beat. My thanks go to the fire service for enabling local officers to remain in the building which means the residents of Shepshed shouldn't see any change to the service they already receive.........

29th September 2011http://www.leics.police.uk/policing/3_counties_bcu/13_loughborough/blog/2011-09/#p1001I am just reviewing the latest figures for people living in the Loughborough, Shepshed and Hathern areas who are happy with the service they have received from us and I must say I am extremely heartened by them. Specific areas such as with victims of Anti-Social Behaviour and Hate Crime are showing a significant increase in satisfaction levels. This to me looks like the result of us getting things right more often with reduced resources. I have spoken in previous newsletters (and updates on the Leicestershire Police website) about how we are having to work smarter with less (together with our partners), the fact that you, the public, are pleased with the service you receive tells me that it's working.

It is through consultation with you that we establish the priorities in this newsletter. That makes you one of our key partners in determining and directly influencing where we put our resources. Please take any opportunity you can to communicate what you think to us, only by listening to each other and working closely together can I improve the service you receive.

13 September 2011http://www.leics.police.uk/policing/3_counties_bcu/13_loughborough/blog/2011-09/#p994Hello everybody,

On Monday 5th September 2011 I took over from Acting Inspector Jamie Osborne who has been running the station since the beginning of May.

I have been running Rutland LPU for the last two and a half years. I have had a great time there but I'm looking forward to the new challenge of running a busy town station with more staff and different challenges and, with the start of the Olympics less than a year away, it promises to be a busy and interesting time.

Like previous Inspectors, I am tough on crime and will continue the relentless pursuit of the minority of people who commit the majority of crime.  Over the last three years at Rutland I have overseen a reduction in burglary of 56% and a three year reduction in anti-social behaviour.  Loughborough is bigger and busier of course but there is a great team of officers working across this vibrant town and I am excited to be in charge during 2012 which will be one of the biggest years for the town as the University is hosting Team GB and the Japanese athletes.

I recognise the importance of strong partnership working and am looking forward to getting to know a whole range of partners that we regularly work with to work together to tackle the problems that affect people's quality of life.  I want people to contact me by phone, email or in person if they have any issues they would like to discuss.

Regards.....

10th August 2011http://www.leics.police.uk/policing/3_counties_bcu/13_loughborough/blog/2011-08/#p976Hi everybody,

I just wanted to take the time to say a huge thank you to all our local communities and to the numerous residents who have taken the time to show there support and ensure that the Loughborough area is a great place to live and work.

Given the recent national events and potential for perceived fear in the communities, it was great to see lots of families in the Town Centre enjoying 'Loughborough by the sea' and the Farmers market today. The occasional down pour didn't dampen the atmosphere!

Once again thank you to all who have taken the time to update Facebook, it is great to see that so many of you value the work and effort my team are putting in to provide a service to you that is intent on reducing crime and anti sociable behaviour. Let us keep up the hard work and together we will keep building on our successes.

Please use any means possible to communicate your views to us. I greatly value your suggestions on how we can improve our service to you.

Regards,

Inspector Jamie Osborne
