19th January 2010, Insp Tim McCabe
Happy New Year!
Welcome again to my monthly update. From a policing perspective it has been a good start to the year. I am pleased to say that our Christmas spike in burglaries didn't materialise this year. We were greatly assisted by the unusually cold snap of weather that, on one side of the coin, caused significant problems for our motorists and schools but on the other, seemed to prevent our habitual burglars from getting out and about.
I was braced for the return of our student population after the Christmas break. Many premises are left vacant during the holiday and it is only upon the return of the tenants that they discover they have had a break in. We are now a couple of weeks into the term, things have settled down and it appears to be business as usual. We are conducting extra patrols to deter burglars, offer crime prevention advice and deal with anti-social behaviour firmly and promptly throughout January. I hope that some of the messages we are giving out prompt people into thinking "crime prevention" whenever they leave the house and, if they are going out, to consider how their behaviour may adversely affect others.
The latest crime stats are encouraging. A direct comparison of November 2009 to December 2009 shows;
Domestic burglary in Shepshed has dropped
Vehicle crime on the Storer and Lemyngton Ward has dropped.
Violent crime on Lemyngton, Hastings and Garendon wards have dropped
Anti-social behaviour on the Lemyngton ward has dropped
Overall crime across the Loughborough and Shepshed area has dropped-specifically on the Lemyngton and Shelthorpe wards.
I am particularly upbeat about the above points and look forward to consolidating/improving them in the coming months.
As New Year resolutions slip away for another year have you ever thought about doing something that makes a real difference to your community?
The Loughborough Local Policing Unit is offering opportunities to become Police Service Volunteers (PSV). The PSV team are involved in many different roles from neighbourhood policing, crime reduction, front enquiry office, CCTV monitoring and much more. As a PSV we would ask that you spare 2 to 4 hours per week and we will provide both a uniform and training.
