15th March 2009, Insp Tim McCabe
Hello and welcome to the Loughborough Local Policing Unit (LPU) blog.
My name is Tim McCabe and I am your local LPU Commander. This is the first opportunity I have had to share with you, our successes and challenges.
I am counting on your support in making Loughborough and the surrounding villages a safe place to live and hope you find the following useful.
Southfields Ward
This area encompasses the very heart of Loughborough town centre. Many of you will know it well by day and some, better by night. It is a safe and busy town with many licensed public houses, restaurants and nightclubs. On any Friday or Saturday night, the centre can have up to 10 to 12,000 thousand people passing through and whilst many enjoy a happy experience, unfortunately there are a few who are caught up in trouble.
It is for this reason that you will see a high grading for violent offences and anti social behaviour in this location. However, what is pleasing is that, since last month we have seen a 16.5% reduction in violent offences within the town centre. This will continue to be a high priority for me and my team. I have a zero tolerance policy for both those people who seek trouble and those premises that do no promote a sensible environment for sensible drinking.
There are excellent CCTV facilities in this ward, which are there to make you feel safe and to catch those that cause trouble.
I will keep you updated of future crime reduction plans I have for this location., but in the meantime, continue to enjoy the night time economy and rest assured that compared to the large number of visitors we have to the town, the violent crime figures are relatively small.
Hastings Ward
This ward boasts one of the most diverse communities within the LPU. It is a location where both the police and the Local Authority are focusing a lot of resources. I have recently researched and submitted an application for this area to be deemed a priority neighbourhood. If successful I hope to have a number of designated officers working out of an office based in a local 'Community House'
You will see there has been an increase in robberies in this ward. However, as an LPU the reduction in robberies in the past 12 months has been a real success. However, any robbery is one too many and I'll continue to target offenders.
Overall crime on this ward is higher than average and this has largely been down to a number of burglary dwellings. Many of these properties have been left insecure, with open windows and doors. You can really assist me here by ensuring that you always lock you house securely and make it difficult for any burglar.
However, despite this rise in burglaries on this ward, the LPU overall has seen a fantastic reduction in the offence. Currently we are showing an 11.3% reduction on burglary dwellings- one of the best in the force.
Lemyngton Ward
This area borders on to the Hastings Ward and is currently shown as an above average grading for violent offences. It forms part of the priority neighbourhood for both my team and Charnwood Borough Council.
Unfortunately, some of the offences are of a domestic nature, often fuelled by alcohol. I am truly committed to positively tackling domestic abuse and would urge any victims of such a crime to come forward and seek our support.
That said, last month saw an 11.3% reduction in violent crime on this ward, a trend I hope continues to repeat itself.
I hope this information has been of interest to you. I will continue to target the persistent offenders who seek to undermine those of us tasked with building a safer community.
I meet weekly with my team, to set a Top 10 of criminals we believe are targeting Loughborough and the surrounding villages. Code named Operation Invoke, the strategy is showing some great results. To date we have seen a
11.3% reduction in burglary dwellings
11% reduction in theft from motor vehicles
15.6% reduction in vehicles stolen
However, I still need your support. If you have any information that can help us, please call crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
