9th July 2009, Mike Chandler
Blaby Local Policing Unit now has a new commander, Inspector Jon Brown. Blaby also has a new Citizen Focus Sergeant, Sgt Mike Chandler and Blaby North have their own Neighbourhood Sergeant, Sgt Rachael Payne. We are all dedicated to delivering the service that Blaby district deserves and building on the outstanding work of Inspector Chell and Sgt Kev Brown.
I would now like to update you with what has been happening at Blaby Local Policing Unit during the past few weeks and what we have planned for the month ahead.
Firstly we have identified and arrested a number of burglars in the district and this has had a positive effect on the reported crime figures. We intend to continue target suspects and offenders and provide a safe place for you to live and work.
We have run a large operation in partnership with some of our headquarter colleagues and outside agencies, such as DVLA, VOSA and Magistrates Courts to target illegal vehicles. This lead to a number of good results including catching up with a male who has had an outstanding court fine dating back to 2001 and seizure of an unlicensed / uninsured limousine taxi. The innocent couple who were en route to a holiday to celebrate their anniversary in the taxi to Birmingham airport were then whisked away in a police vehicle so they didn't miss their flight.
At the JAG this month an issue at Glenfield was identified with youths gathering on Tournament Road and harassing local residents. This will be the focus of increased police activity and proactive work of the neighbourhood team lead by PC Turner and the IMPACT Team from the Youth Offending Service.
The car cruising at Asda was also raised as an issue and will be part of the Summer Safety Campaign and will be tackled by a number of agencies.
And finally looking at the crime figures for the month of June I wish to make the following observations and talk about where there appears to be increases and what we plan to do about these.
Burglary - As previously mentioned we have made some serious in roads in identifying and arresting some core offenders and this will hopefully be reflected in the figures next month. However in the mean time there are above average levels of burglaries reported in Ellis Ward and Muxloe Ward. This relates to 7 additional reports in Ellis Ward and 5 in Muxloe Ward. There is an ongoing operation in this area to tackle the issue of burglaries and it remains a priority to us to deal with as we are aware of how much impact it has on the victim.
Vehicle Crime - The areas of Enderby and St Johns is shown as being above average although when you actually look this relates to 2 additional reports. Ellis Ward is shown above average but has had no additional reports. Whilst looking at the burglary increase in Ellis ward we will also be tackling the vehicle crime as quite often there is a cross over with the same offenders. To assist us with this work can I ask that you report any suspicious activity to 0116 222 2222 or Crime Stoppers.
Robbery - There has been 1 robbery reported in Blaby South but this means a 100% rise is shown. This situation will be monitored and any further reports dealt with robustly. And I would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that we do not have a robbery problem at Blaby.
ASB - This has actually decreased in Winstanley Ward by 21 reports which mean a 7% reduction. However it is still above the average levels. There are a series of activities and operations planned over the summer period to challenge ASB and so hopefully mean a further decrease next month.
Please feel confident to contact me in relation to any of the above items or to make me aware of the issues that matter to you, and I will bring you more news next month.
