Insp Shane O'Neill Graffiti taggers in clearing up mess 28th July 2010, Insp Shane O'Neill

Two graffiti taggers had to clean up their own mess last night (27 July) on the St Peters estate.

Pc Steve Bales and Pc Tom Walkinshaw from the Spinney Hill neighbourhood team used new graffiti cleaning kits provided by the local authority to make community resolution faster with those identified.

The taggers Diamond, Zed and Muzi were out and about overseen by the two officers clearing up on Maidstone Road and Spinney Hill Park where they cleared up litter and cleaned graffiti off walls. Their work had to be sufficient to pass inspection which it did.

This type of resolution also allows time for the officers to speak about their offending and the effect it has on the wider community, as well as leaving the area cleaner than before.

The neighbourhood team for Spinney Hills has been busy this week in the Ottowa Road Priority the community told us about.

Pc Reg Varney, on Monday 12 July, was quick to identify some suspicious activity when on patrol in the area of Ottowa Road and detained three people who were searched and arrested subsequently for possession with intent to supply class B drugs.

Following this Pc Claire Jackson was then on Tuesday 13 July, saw a further group that matched those described by local residents causing anti social behaviour, and upon stopping them she arrested a male who lived nearby and was charged with possession of controlled drugs and offences relating to his premises being used in relation to drugs.

The team also seized over a £1000 in cash believed to be proceeds of crime.

The St Matthews Housing office and the neighbourhood team are working to ensure that the resident charged in that area does not continue his activity further which neighbours are pleased to have seen the action taken so far.

Insp Shane O'Neill Clean up on Sparrow Park clear to see 8th July 2010, Insp Shane O'Neill

The team of police officers, street wardens and parks officers managed within a few hours to clear away graffiti of walls, overgrown untidy foilage, replant bushes and plants in the displays and trim bushes so its easier to see in from outside.

They all enjoyed the work and a number of local residents and park users watched on as the improvements were made.

The improvements will certainly make the park more attractive to the local community and better visibility from outside will discourage people drinking alcohol in the area and make it easier to tackle the reducing problem in that small area.

Insp Shane O'Neill Mop and Bucket approach to anti social behaviour 8th July 2010, Insp Shane O'Neill

In the last week the Neighbourhood officers on St Matthews have been patrolling in plain clothes the stairwells in and around Ottowa Road as part of their activity to tackle the issues reported by residents.

While doing so they found a young man who admitted using the block to smoke some cannabis and although none was found on him he apologised for not considering the thoughts of the residents.

As part of his apology the neighbourhood team have arranged for him to get a mop and bucket and clean the stairwells for the residents. While doing this I am sure that he will have time to reconsider his actions in future.

The Spinney Hill neighbourhood team has been working with residents and partner agencies, such as St Peters Housing Office, Leicester Anti Social Behaviour Unit, Social Services and others, to address the increase in graffiti, noise and nuisance in this area.

A problem teenager was identified and interventions implemented to prevent and redirect this person into other activities. Criminal offences had also been committed by this person resulting in them being issued with:

* A rehabilitation order for two years.

* A curfew for three months, starting from June 18 2010.

* An order not to associate with a specific individual for two years.

* A restraining order which means they cannot go to or enter Charnwood Walk in Leicester. This order lasts until 17/04/2011.

Since the intervention began in April 2010 there has been a reduction in the number of calls from neighbours and other residents.
