Insp Steve Riley Great Work by Belgrave Team 29th July 2010, Insp Steve Riley

I would like to highlight the great work performed by the Belgrave Neighbourhood Policing Team over the last fortnight.  On July 18th the team arrested a male following a robbery.  He was subsequently charged and remanded in custody.  On July 22nd following local community concerns about a house which had been linked to drugs supply and anti social behaviour they executed a warrant and a male was arrested.  On July 28th a number of burglaries took place on the Rushey Mead.  The following day whilst on patrol on his beat PC Gary Bailey recognised one of the males responsible and arrested him.

Insp Steve Riley Tackling under age drinking. 23rd July 2010, Insp Steve Riley

Undercover officers carried out a number of test purchases at off-licences in Leicester on Friday (July 16) as part of a crackdown on underage drinking during the school summer holidays.

Police hope that the test purchases will act as a warning to shopkeepers who may be tempted to sell alcohol to people under the age of 18 over the summer months.

Out of the 13 off-licences targeted across the city just over a third, sold alcohol to the 15-year-old boy who posed as a customer.  In our area Gokani Grocers on Harrison Road in Belgrave, Roundway Stores on Humberstone Lane and Tesco on Maidenwell Avenue in Hamilton, will now be interviewed by police and could be issued with a fine of up to £80.

The summer crackdown on underage drinking is being funded through the Government TKAP project, which focuses on tackling knife and serious youth violence in Leicester. Another 51 areas across the country are also taking part in the TKAP project.

Insp Steve Riley Cardboard Cops 16th July 2010, Insp Steve Riley

A supermarket in Leicester will have a police presence 24/7 thanks to the efforts of local school children.

Pupils at Hope Hamilton Primary School, Kestrels' Field Primary School and Humberstone Junior School have created life-size cardboard cut outs of their favourite neighbourhood officers.

The cut outs of PC Katy Burnham, PC Martin Peberdy and PC Alex Catlow are being displayed in the Tesco store at Hamilton for the community to enjoy.

PC Katy Burnham, neighbourhood officer for Humberstone and Hamilton, said: "We were really impressed by the quality of the cardboard cut outs and the efforts that the school children have made.

"It's a great community initiative and a fun way of reminding the community who their neighbourhood officers are. The whole point of neighbourhood policing is ensuring that residents and businesses get to know their local officers and the ways in which they can contact them, so that we can work together to resolve any policing issues in the community."

You can view the picture of the cut out on the home page of the Force website.  PC Alex Catlow was more than a little puzzled at his cut out.

Insp Steve Riley Tackling ASB 13th July 2010, Insp Steve Riley

Residents of Redwood Walk and Lombardy Rise stopped their local beat officer, PC Josh Harrison, at the weekend to thank him for helping to reduce anti social behaviour in the area.

Part of the success is down to our visibility.  Since February this year Keyham Lane LPU has been operating an anti social behaviour car every day.  Its patrols are focused around analysis of the previous 24 hours anti social behaviour as well as long term trends.  Once the vehicle identifies vulnerable people or repeat offenders then the local Neighbourhood Team together with our partners intervene and design long term solutions to improve the quality of life for the residents in that area.

If you are experiencing anti social behaviour then let us know by ringing 0116-2222222.

Insp Steve Riley Court Result 9th July 2010, Insp Steve Riley

A man and woman are beginning prison sentences for burglary and handling stolen property following the discovery of over 500 items of stolen property at a house in Rushey Mead.

Officers recovered the haul from a house in Trevino Drive on November 18, 2009. The stolen property mainly consisted of jewellery, mobile phones, cameras and other small electrical items which had been taken during burglaries committed in Rushey Mead and Northfields in October and November 2009.

30-year-old Kuljit Kaur Dhillon and 24-year-old Jatinder Singh Johal, both of Trevino Drive, were arrested in connection with the stolen property. Dhillon was subsequently charged with five counts of burglary and for obtaining leave to enter or remain in the United Kingdom by deception. Johal was charged with ten counts of handling stolen goods and two counts of possessing false identity documents with intent.

The pair appeared at Leicester Crown Court on Monday July 5, 2010, where Dhillon was sentenced to 24 months in prison, minus the 227 days she has already spent remanded in custody. She will be automatically deported to India upon her release.

Johal was sentenced to 14 months in prison, minus the 227 days he has already spent remanded in custody. He will also be automatically deported to India upon release from prison.

Sergeant Wayne Nimblette from the Neighbourhood Action Team at Keyham Lane Police Station said: "This is an excellent result which has led to a burglar and handler in the area being imprisoned.

"Criminals found guilty of committing burglary can expect to be dealt with by the courts using a full range of sentencing powers. I am pleased to say that we were able to offer the victims of these burglaries some consolation by reuniting them with their stolen property."

Insp Steve Riley Burglaries and Vehicle Crime 5th July 2010, Insp Steve Riley

Over the past two weeks the local policing unit has managed to reduce burglaries by 50%.  There have been some excellent arrests and when these individuals appear at Court i will let you know what sentence they get.

However vehicle crime has only gone down by 20%.  As i have mentioned before nearly all of these crimes involve people leaving items on show in their car and opportunist thieves then breaking in.  A lot of the offences are happening in the Hamilton area.  Please either put your valuables in your boot or take them with you.  If you see anyone in your street who you don't recognise and feel they are acting suspiciously then give us a call.  We have dedicated officers on each day whose sole job is to respond to incidents of burglary and car crime.

Some of the thefts have involved number plates.  In the past we have given away screws which can be used to secure your number plate.  We will be repeating this in the Hamilton area.
