As we enter the Autumn months of the year and having undertaken the role of Leicester City BCU Commander for nearly two years, I wanted to take an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of this year and to express my thanks from the communities of Leicester for the support which my officers have received.

We continue to face significant challenge, not only in terms of the reduced budgets which we work towards, but in reducing the levels of crime across the City and the number of victims being subjected to criminal offences. We are working hard to ensure that we do this, not only through pro-active targeting of criminals, but through the education of the communities in preventing crime against them and their property and by working together, with communities and partner agencies to engage and work pro-actively and to support and maximise the opportunity for crimes to be detected and offenders brought to justice.

This year has seen a significant step to increasing the amount of information which we as a Constabulary share; through the use of locally based multi-lingual radio and of course social media, we have been able to engage with communities, who may not have ordinarily had contact with us. This method of communication has received significant support from you and will continue to be developed on a more local basis for information directly affecting your neighbourhood, in addition to greater use of visual aids promoted through the use of YouTube. The launch of Neighbourhood Link in the Summer, is another useful method of communicating with communities and in sharing preventative and informative information.

We have undergone considerable organisational change and have re-designed the way in which our officers respond to emergency calls to ensure more effective briefings, greater officer visibility and greater efficiency for policing activity across the City. However, neighbourhood policing remains at the heart of what we do and we know, because you tell us, that it is important for neighbourhood teams to be accessible to you. We therefore, continue to identify and secure accommodation in the heart of where communities live and work. In the earlier part of the year, a dedicated police office at the Leicester Royal Infirmary has been welcomed by staff, patients and visitors and Glenfield Hospital followed suit, with an office opening a few months ago.

It is overwhelming to hear of the initiatives, events and campaigns that my team have been involved in and continue to be involved in with community members and partner agencies. However, we could not do the job to the high standard that we do, without the support and assistance of the community and for that, my appreciation is offered. My officers and I are committed to ensuring that Leicester continues to be a safe place to live, work and visit.
