An appeal is being made for witnesses after an Leicestershire Police officer was assaulted while attempting to stop a man stealing a bicycle.
The officer, who was in plain clothes and is based in Leicester, was in the High Street at around 5.20pm yesterday (Monday 13 December) when he saw a man stealing a sky blue-coloured bicycle from outside a shop.
He attempted to arrest the man at the junction with St Augustine Road. The man resisted arrest and the officer was thrown into the road, suffering a serious head injury. The man then rode off on the bicycle along Braunstone Gate and Hinckley Road, before turning onto Great Central Way.
The man has not been located and an investigation into the incident is continuing. The officer remains in hospital in a stable condition.
Detective Sergeant Jenny Tattersall, from the force’s Complex Investigation Team, said: “I would like to speak to anyone who was in the city centre and saw what happened, filmed the incident or has CCTV footage.
“I’d also like to speak to any motorists who were driving along Braunstone Gate, Hinckley Road or Great Central Way and who captured a man on a sky blue bike on their dashcam.
“Any details you’re able to provide could help our investigation.”
