Thousands took to the streets of Leicester last night to celebrate Diwali with dancing and a spectacular light show to round off events.
The evening saw high visibility patrols take place throughout the day and into the early hours to ensure celebrations took place safely and to engage with and provide reassurance to the community.
Officers seized a number of fireworks following reports of them being used inappropriately in the street but there were no reports of disorder.
Temporary Chief Constable Rob Nixon said: “I’d like to thank everyone for celebrating in the spirit that Diwali should be celebrated.
“I was out on the ground last night and the atmosphere was brilliant, with lots of families out in Belgrave celebrating and watching the organised firework display.
“The policing footprint was significant allowing us to engage with the community, provide some reassurance and respond quickly to any concerns or issues raised.
“I’m extremely pleased that our communities were able to come together for this important and happy occasion.”
In a joint statement, PC Rajan Popat chair of the force’s Hindu Police Association (HPA) and Sergeant Parminder Kang, vice chair of the Sikh Police Association (SPA), said: “Celebrating Diwali in our multi-cultural city is a joyous time and we’re pleased that we were able to do that together with our families, colleagues, and people of all different faiths in a safe environment. We wish everyone a Happy New Year.”
