A Leicestershire officer has been picked to join the national police swim team after making her debut at the recent police championships.
Competing for the first time in six years, PC Rhianna Sheehan swam in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle events at the annual Police Sport UK (PSUK) Swimming and Water Polo Championships at the end of last month.
Having swam at national level as a child, PC Sheehan was forced to give up competing at the age of 18 due to an injury.
In November 2022, the 24-year-old – who has been a cop for two years – decided the time was right to dive back into the sport.
“I swam competitively as a child for nearly 10 years before having to stop at 18 because of a shoulder injury,” said PC Sheehan.
“Last year I discovered the force has a swim team and I felt the time was right to start training again.
“I went to the championships with no expectations – after years away from racing I just wanted to enjoy the experience.
“Being selected for the national team was a complete surprise but I am very excited to get back into competing as part of the Leicestershire and national teams.”
Following six months of training she headed to Merseyside in April with the rest of the Leicestershire team – narrowly missing a podium spot in the 200m race.
Based on the strength of her performance she was selected for the national team – joining fellow Leicestershire officer Superintendent Aimee Ramm, who has retained her place as part of the GB team for the 17th consecutive year.

Securing the top spot in all seven races at the recent championships, Superintendent Ramm also holds eight national police records and multiple British, European and world masters’ records.
