Officers are asking people not to share false information suggesting historic events in Leicester are part of the recent protests and disorder.
Chief Superintendent Shane O’Neill said: “What we are being informed of today is that images and videos relating to historic events in Leicester are being shared online alongside the suggestion it relates to issues seen over the past week, which is concerning, disappointing and extremely unhelpful.
“Our message remains clear. To help avoid the sharing of misinformation and speculation, do not share false information. Only share information supplied by us or known to be true and do not respond to any speculation.
“Our position remains the same in that we continue to monitor and access the current picture here in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland alongside our colleagues nationally and specialist resources remain on duty to respond to any issues we may see across our force area.
“If you are concerned or have information that may assist us, please do link in with your Neighbourhood Policing contacts or report information to us online or via 999 in an emergency.”
