We reflect on 2024 in force

A lot has happened in force throughout 2024.

Policing today operates in a complex and dynamic environment which involves balancing evolving crime trends and heightened public expectations. However our goal has not changed – to keep you, the public of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, safe.

Over the last 12 months, we:

• Received more than 190,000 calls to 999 and more than 275,000 to 101
• Received more than 50,000 online reports
• Received more than 4,300 reports of missing people
• Created nearly 260,000 incidents and recorded nearly 93,000 crimes
• Made approximately 15,000 arrests
• Responded to more than 2,100 media enquiries

“These numbers reflect the lives we touch, protect, and serve every single day,” said Chief Constable Rob Nixon.

“On top of this, the past year has seen us navigate high levels of organisational change. Many have stepped into leadership positions earlier than in previous years. But the dedication and adaptability of our officers and staff has been crucian to maintaining our resilience and performance.

“We have continued to deliver an exceptional service and I want to extend my deepest thanks to our officers, staff, volunteers and communities for their contributions. It’s this collective effort that allows us to overcome obstacles and achieve success.

“As we look ahead to 2025, I am confident that through collaboration and innovation, we will continue to deliver an outstanding service.”

Some notable moments over the last year include:

• January: We featured in the ITV documentary TikTok: Murder Gone Viral, which showcased our investigation into the tragic murders of Saqib Hussain and Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin. Justice was served, with four individuals convicted of murder and three of manslaughter
• February: We supported the national Stop, Think Fraud campaign aimed at educating people to think about making payments or providing personal financial details
• March: The opening of a new neighbourhood police office in Lutterworth reinforced our commitment to local policing, ensuring officers are based in the heart of their communities
• April: The #HelpUsHelpYou campaign significantly reduced call waiting times in our Contact Management Department, helping the public reach the right service quickly
• May: One of our former officers was featured in an exhibition exploring the close historical links between the Battle of Bosworth and the beginnings of the Sikh faith in Punjab
• June: Our Safer Saffron campaign tackled serious and organised crime on the Saffron Lane Estate, while Operation Guarding led to 94 arrests and the recovery of nearly 650 digital exhibits in the fight against online child abuse
• July: We set up a new police team was set up to increase visible patrols and prevent crime and antisocial behaviour in Leicester city centre

• September: One of our officers was recognised for ‘bringing hope and support to countless women and girls,’ at the national Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) awards
• October: A partnership with Turning Point introduced ‘Street Outreach’ workers in Leicester city centre, contributing to a 39% reduction in violent crime and antisocial behaviour
• November: The Don’t Play Their Game campaign raised awareness about Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE), helping young people recognise the dangers of county lines and seek support
• December: We relaunched the Walk Away campaign – aimed at tacking violence in the night-time economy – in time for Christmas social events

“With so many impactful moments, it’s almost impossible to cover them all,” added CC Nixon.

“Each one is a testament to the professionalism, resilience, and teamwork of everyone within the force. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what can be achieved in 2025.”
