Detectives investigating the murder of Matthew Schofield have today (Thursday 27 June) made a further arrest.
The man, aged 18, was arrested on suspicion of murder and following a police interview has been released on bail.
Matthew’s death has been the subject of an ongoing police investigation after he was found dead
in Belgrave Road, Leicester, in the early hours of Sunday 11 June 2023.
Enquiries led officers to discover the 34-year-old had been assaulted in the street, close to the junction with Belgrave Circle, at around 3am.
During the past year, detectives have continued to work to establish the circumstances surrounding his death and identify the people involved in the incident prior to Matthew being found.
A total of 17 people have been arrested in connection with the investigation. Thirteen people are currently on police bail, one person was released under investigation and three were released with no further action.
Throughout the investigation police have continued to appeal for people to come forward with information which may assist.
In December last year, six months after the attack, Matthew’s mother Emma Daniels joined Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Mark Parish, to make a heartfelt appeal for anyone who may know something to ‘do the right thing’.
Both also appeared on BBC’s Crimewatch in March this year in a continued effort to appeal for information.
Today, as a further arrest was made, the plea for anyone who can help remains.
DI Mark Parish said: “It has been more than a year since Matthew died but our investigation remains ongoing. We are still carrying out enquiries and making arrests in order to identify the people responsible for assaulting Matthew.
“It is never too late to come forward and tell us what you know – this can even be done anonymously. If you were in the area and saw something or know what happened but haven’t yet come forward.
“At the heart of this investigation is a grieving mother who deserves to know fully what happened to her son. Emma has shown such strength through the last year and has been willing to help in any way she can in an effort to see that those responsible are brought to justice.”
Information can be passed directly to the detectives investigating Matthew’s death via Public Portal (mipp.police.uk)
Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
