A rapist who exhibited controlling, coercive and violent behaviour towards a woman has been jailed after her brave account in court helped to convict him.
Adrian Lee – also known as Adrian Tiene – carried out his horrific crimes over a week-long period. Just days after meeting his victim, he moved his belongings into her home – and started to tell he she could not see her friends.
Lee, 29, also began to demand to know who she was messaging and verbally and racially abused her. Around 48 hours after they met, he raped her for the first time.
Over the following days, he continued to exhibit controlling behaviour, telling her what to cook, making her watch television with him and forcing her to go and visit his family in Worcestershire. On that occasion, he also demanded he drove her car, despite not having the relevant requirements to do so.
While still residing at her address in Leicester, Lee smoked cannabis and snorted cocaine. On one day, he became physically violent towards her. She was able to leave her property and ran to a friend’s house where she disclosed what had been happening.
Lee, of HMP Lincoln, was subsequently arrested, interviewed and charged. On 20 September, following a trial at Leicester Crown Court, he was found guilty of three counts of raping a woman aged 16 or over, one count of assaulting a female 13 or over by penetration with part of a body/a thing, one count of sexual assault on a female and one count of engaging in controlling/coercive behaviour in an intimate/family relationship.
Today (Wednesday 22 January) at the same court he was sentenced to a total of 22 years. Upon his release he will also be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a restraining order and will sign the Sex Offenders’ Register.
Detective Sergeant Sarah Jones was the officer in the case. She said: “First and foremost, I must commend the victim in this case for her bravery in reliving her ordeal in front of a jury. Her evidence was key in securing Lee’s conviction and I hope today’s outcome provides her with a degree of relief and closure.
“The evidence in the case suggests he sees women as being there for him to take advantage of – both for his own sexual gratification and his own personal gain.
“The public should know about his behaviour and his conviction for these crimes. I hope our communities can also take some reassurance from the fact he’s behind bars.”
