The Blue Light Hijab® Project is a pioneering initiative from Leicestershire Police, aimed at creating a bespoke, safety-compliant Hijab for Muslim women working in frontline policing. Born from a two-decade-long pursuit to address the lack of suitable religious headwear in police uniforms, the project culminated in a collaborative design effort with De Montfort University.
The result is a two-piece Hijab that balances modesty, comfort, and operational safety—featuring quick-release seams and magnetic closures to prevent misuse in high-risk situations.
Legally trademarked and design protected, backed by wearer trials and combat testing, the Blue Light Hijab® not only enhances inclusivity within the force but also sets a new standard for uniform innovation across emergency services.
With national and international interest already growing, the project launched commercially in December 2025, offering Muslim women in public and private sectors a confident and proud choice in workplace attire.
This product must not be used in conjunction with a fitted Pacemaker/ICD device, due to the use of magnets. Please consult your health care professional prior to wearing it.
An alternative closing mechanism may be made available upon request, by contacting Leicestershire police uniform stores, FHQ.

Using a fabric tape measure, measure your around-face circumference in centimetres (cm).
Place the tape measure over the top of the head (where the frontal region meets the mid-scalp region), down under the chin (where the chin region meets the neck region) and back up to the top of the head to give you your around-face measurement. See the illustration below for reference.
When taking this measurement, it may help to tie hair back and remove your hijab (if you’re wearing one).

Please refer to the information and illustrations provided below for guidance on how to wear the Blue Light Hijab ®.
The Blue Light Hijab ® is a two-piece set consisting of a headband and separate hijab garment.
Advice regarding the seams on the headband
Please handle the headband garment with care. When putting the headband over your head please try to avoid overstretching the seams, as they’ve been designed to tear when under tension for your safety.
Location of the seams
Please position the two seams at the back of the head (in-between the ears) when wearing. This location meets aesthetic and functional requirements for the Auditory access points, whilst remaining comfortable for the wearer.
Front and back hems
As shown in the illustration, the 5cm hem is designed to be worn at the front of the head and the 2cm hem at the back of the head. That said, there is nothing to stop the individual from wearing the 5cm hem at the back of the head and the 2cm hem at the front of the head. There is no right or wrong location. It’s your personal preference.

The hijab garment is designed to be worn over the top of the headband garment.
Magnetic quick-release fastening
The hijab features a magnetic quick-release fastening designed to fasten under the chin and down the chest. Please be careful when handling the magnets, as they may snap together when in close proximity to one another.
Bonded earpiece wire and auditory access slit
As shown in the illustration, the hijab features four bonded earpiece wire and auditory device openings on either side of the head. There is a left and right opening on both the headband and hijab and to cater to both left and right hand radio and auditory device users. The slit is large enough for the wire and earpiece to be fed through. The wire will also sit comfortably underneath the hijab if you would prefer not to feed the wire through the slit opening.
