Diwali Celebrations
Leicestershire Police would like to wish everyone a Happy Diwali.
There will be a visible and dedicated police presence throughout the celebrations. We're committed to ensuring everyone can celebrate safely.
The following advice is intended to keep you safe throughout the celebrations, particularly if you are out and about.
Burglary
- Make sure that you lock your windows and doors, even if you’re at home.
- Use a timer switch for lights to make it look like someone is home.
- Don’t leave valuables on display.
Personal Safety
- Be aware of what is happening around you and trust your instincts.
- Avoid wearing headphones or talking on mobile phones as this can distract you.
- Keep your purse and valuables inside a zipped compartment in your bag – if you’re wearing jewellery cover it with a scarf.
- Keep your vehicle locked and don’t leave anything on display.
Fire Safety
- Never leave your cooking pans unattended with the heat switched on
- Put a diva or candle at a safe distance from curtains, decorations and clothing and never leave them unattended
- Children under 5 should not use sparklers.
- Children over the age of 5 should be supervised and gloves should be used with sparklers held at arm’s length.
- Place sparklers in a bucket of water once out and leave them overnight before disposing of them
- Setting off sparklers and fireworks in a public place is illegal with penalties including a maximum fine of £5,000
Drones
- Pilots of drones are reminded that they must adhere to the drone code The Drone and Model Aircraft Code | UK Civil Aviation Authority (caa.co.uk)
- Because of the crowded nature of the Diwali Event and the risk to public safety, we strongly discourage anyone from flying a Drone in or over the area.
- We will have a dedicated Counter Drone Team working as part of our Operation. If you break the rules, your Drone is liable to seizure, and you may be prosecuted
